Icons

Icons made since the beginning of Christianity are represented images of divinity and saints exposed in churches and homes of Christians worldwide. The word icon comes from the Greek "ikon" meaning the image.

Carved icons are represented as an expression of Divinity of the Romanian people, who with the material at hand, wood has managed to create true works of art. We meet mostly carved and painted iconostasis, but unfortunately most were lost in fires or because of looting of the invaders throughout history. There are still medieval art masterpieces preserved in some Romanian monasteries; heritage icons, considered miraculous, that are worshiped with reverence by people today.

Icons of sculpted wood realized with great finesse are living proof that folk Art is alive and still exist with the craftsmen that continue to beautify the Romanian houses and impress the foreigners with their uniqueness. They can represent saints or angels, Virgin Mary or Jesus, or scenes from the life of the Savior. Everyone has a patron saint and it is desirable to have the image or icon of this saint in high esteem in the house. Icons made by us can have natural size, are made of solid wood, oak hard wood species that has a specific color, which can be accentuated by lakes and special oils. Also carved icons can be painted and then varnished. All icons are framed by decorated frame with a "rope" carved symbolizing the continuity of life. It can be decorated with other motifs such as floral or geometric patterns. The images shown are naive invoice or Byzantine highlighting a stylized image away from the mundane. All works are unique, made of chisel by hand with patience and devotion to God. They are meant to arouse feelings of respect and love for the Holy, of gratitude and veneration.
